Exploring the Polar Regions

 Exploring the Polar Regions

Patrick Maselis RDP FRPSL, President of The Royal Philatelic Society London, with Michel Letaillieur FRPSL and Serge Kahn.

The members of The Royal Philatelic Society London were taken on a journey of discovery on 31 May when they enjoyed a wide variety of displays on Polar Philately.

Focusing on material relating to the Arctic and Antarctic, the items on show embraced many facets of our hobby, including postal history, aerophilately, military mail, as well as stamp studies.

Many of the displays focused on the major expeditions and those who led them. These included Amundsen’s Northeast Passage Expedition, the Expédition de Garlache, and the Wilkes Antarctic Expedition, plus those undertaken by Sweden, Germany, Japan and Norway. Naturally featured were the expeditions led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton and Captain Dumont d’Urville.

Other aspects included South Georgia and South Shetlands postal history, the stamps of the British Antarctic Territory, plus pre-Second World War Polar lighter-than-air flights and Norwegian whaling mail.

Thanks to all those from the international Polar community who had contributed were given by Michel Letaillieur FRPSL, with special thanks to Serge Kahn and Trevor Cornford who had co-ordinated the displays.

Those wishing to visit The Royal Philatelic Society London at 41 Devonshire Place, London W1G 6JY, or be a guest at one of its meetings, are asked to contact the Administrative Office (020 7486 1044).
