It is my very sad responsibility to have to tell you that Francis Kiddle died this morning. Francis was diagnosed with lung cancer just over two months ago, and he spent three weeks in hospital with pneumonia. He came home just over a week ago died surrounded by his family.
Francis was so important to international philately for many decades, he was a tireless worker, and a trusted and loved friend and mentor to so many of us. He was a great supporter of FEPA and an informed and knowledgeable juror and delegate to Congresses.

Over 35 national and international jurors from 15 FEPA countries gathered in Budapest on 16 October for a three-day FEPA seminar on judging techniques organised by Mr. Denes CZIROK under the auspices of the Hungarian Philatelic Federation (MABEOSZ).
The focus was on ONE-FRAME exhibits in the traditional, thematic and postal history classes. In each area the discussion was introduced by a leading international judge –Wolf HESS RDP for traditional and thematic and Kurt KIMMEL RDP for postal history. Each gave a presentation exploring the issues raised in creating and judging One Frame exhibits in their class.
This was followed by practical judging work on 34 exhibits brought by the participants which ranged widely across many fields. The exhibits were analysed and evaluated by seven teams using the experimental One-Frame Guidelines published on the FIP homepage.
The seminar concluded with a visit to the Stamp Museum in Budapest, a wonderful facility that has been built up over 90 years which contains extensive collections of stamps from all countries around the world and has an especially important collection of Hungarian philatelic material.

Autumn STAMPEX 2015
This was a small exhibition, almost certainly due to the success of London 2015 Europhilex. The twice-yearly STAMPEX exhibitions at the Business Design Centre in London are running very smoothly with exemplary co-operation between the exhibition organising committee and the Philatelic Traders’ Society. The well-organised catalogue was produced by the team behind Stamp & Coin Mart.
The weather was mixed, but across the four days dealers appeared to be happy, and a number of visitors, probably fellow philatelists, studied the exhibits. The national competitive section included 30 exhibits covering the classes of Traditional Philately, Postal History, Aerophilately, Revenue Philately, Open Philately, and Thematic Philately, plus five Literature entries, while the non-competitive section with 20 exhibits covered all the classes mentioned above as well as Postcards. Eleven members of the Great Britain Overprints Society showed competitive exhibits in Traditional Philately, Postal History, and Aerophilately. Unfortunately the ABPS (Association of British Philatelic Societies) Interfed Competition had only attracted one federation, so congratulations to the Sussex Federation for showing three very interesting exhibits.
Traditionally the Awards Ceremony is preceded by a seminar, and Richard Stock FRPSL gave a PowerPoint presentation on ‘Treatment in Traditional Philately’ illustrated from his Traditional and Postal History exhibits on the Camel man.
The following medals were awarded: four LG, ten G, nineteen LV, nine V, four LS, one each S, SB, B, and one Certificate. The ‘Silver Mail Coach’ for The Best in Show was awarded to Arthur Woo for ‘Guatemala 1879-1881 Small Quetzal Issue’.
As STAMPEX always attracts philatelists from all over Great Britain – and Europe – it is popular for specialist societies to hold meetings during STAMPEX. The specialist societies, which held meetings this time, included the Yugoslavia Study Group, the Helvetia Philatelic Society, the Bechuanalands& Botswana Society, the Malta Study Circle, the Great Britain Philatelic Society, the Concorde Study Circle, the Scout & Guide Stamps Club, the Wreck & Crash Mail Society, the American Stamp Club of GB, the Aden and Somaliland Study Group, and the Burma Myanmar Philatelic Study Circle, showing the wide range of societies that we have in the UK.
And, of course, the Kids Corner, run by Stamp Active, had a large space on the Gallery with a number of activities and showing the entries in the 2015 British Youth Stamp Championships.
Spring STAMPEX 2016 will take place from 17-20 February at the BDC, and on this occasion Germany and Great Britain will also co-host the Seven Nations Challenge between Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, and the USA.
