The UPU will launch its 150th anniversary celebrations in close partnership with La Poste Groupe, La Poste Historical Committee (CHP) and SIRICE laboratory by delving into the rich history of postal services and the UPU through a historical colloquium. The Colloquium will welcome 40 historians, academics and philatelists from over 16 countries under the theme “Achieving ‘a single postal territory’: A global promise – Past and present”. It will serve as an important platform for discussion and an opportunity to build stronger connections between academic historians – a valuable group of stakeholders within the postal sector.
The colloquium is composed of eight sub-themes and will be held on 1 and 2 February, under six different sessions and two parallel workshops. The themes here will explore how the UPU has supported and accompanied postal services to become key components of international communication, business and development over the last century and a half.
The event will be streamed live on UPU TV (tv.upu.int).
Nigeria may not seem the obvious choice of country for a specialist in postal stationery. With a rather limited set of postal stationery classes and issues involved, the number of pages in the Higgins & Gage catalogue is very small. Furthermore, with most issues up to 1960 printed by De la Rue and with their high quality of work, not many varieties are found. However, when we include the precursors from Lagos, Oil Rivers/Niger Coast Protectorate and Southern Nigeria, and if we look beyond the Higgins & Gage catalogue, a whole new world is unravelled with many possibilities of specialisation turning up, as well as many mysteries.
The book was about 90% completed by Peter Hørlyck Hon. FRPSL. Ray Harris took over to finish it following the death of his friend Peter in late 2021.

The French Philatelic Federation (FFAP) has recently announced next year’s Fête du timbre (2024), sponsored by the FFAP, La Poste and Adphil. Eighty-five philatelic societies from all over France have already been registered to participate, each with their own activities.
La Poste has issued a postage stamp and a miniature sheet for the stamp festival following closely this year’s theme, “Voyage along the water”.
