On Saturday, June 3, we had the great honour to offer one of the most important Japanese stamp collections including the most valuable stamp of Asia: the 500 mon Inverted Center, which has been sold for a world record price of 5.4 million Euros*.
An Asian gentleman, bidding via phone, was delighted to become the buyer. The underbidder, an esteemed European collector, was very disappointed to be outbid. He said, “I had prepared my bid as high as 4 million Euros and even made a few more steps, but now I must congratulate the new owner!”.
NORDIA 2023 took place in Garðabær, Iceland, between 2 and 4 June. The exhibition celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first Icelandic stamps, released in 1873.
Presided by Ebbe Eldrup, the Jury judged a total of 57 exhibits in 342 frames. The following were voted as top exhibits:
Championship Class winner: Rikard Bodin (Sweden), “Sweden’s Great Power Era Wars & Swedes in Active Service Abroad 1543-1905”.
Championship Class runner-up: Seija-Riitta Laakso (Finland), “Paris by Night”.
Grand Prix Nordic: Erik Benny Winther (Denmark), “The Classic Stamps of Denmark 1851-1863”.
Grand Prix International: Jan-Olof Ljungh (Sweden), “N.D.P. items sent to Overseas Destinations 1868-1871”.
Grand Prix National: not awarded.
Next up is NORDIA 2024, to be held in Skjærgårdshallen, Langesund, Norway, under FEPA REcognition, between 31 May and 2 June 2024.
At the Annual General Meeting of members of the European Philatelic Academy (Académie Européenne de Philatélie), which took place on Saturday, 27 May, in Essen, Germany, during the IBRA 2023 World Philatelic Exhibition, Peter Suhadolc was elected President. He succeeded Jean Voruz, under whose leadership he was responsible for preparing and publishing the Academy’s internal bulletin Trait d’Union. Jean Voruz presented him with the presidential tie upon his election.
Peter Suhadolc was accepted as a member of the academy in 2004 and, since then, has regularly attended the AEP meetings. Among the Academy’s activities is the annual publication of Opus magazine, for which he contributed an article about the Illyrian provinces some years ago.
