On Friday 18 October, during HAFNIA 24 in Copenhagen, two enlightening seminars were presented to a packed audience by two prominent speakers:
“Open Philately” by Birthe King
A longtime expert and international juror in the Open Philately and Picture Postcards Classes, Ms King delivered her presentation by engaging collectors, exhibitors, and jurors, sharing the magic of exhibiting in Open Philately.
“Trends in International Expertising: Technical Innovations, Use of Databases and AI” by Tobias Huylmans
Mr Huylmans, Managing Director of Köhler & Corinphila Holding GmbH, and a member of the International Philatelic Experts (AIEP), outlined examples of available software and hardware used to detect manipulated postage stamps, postmarks, overprints, and covers, even previously certified items that have now received a ‘red flag.’

The 344-page book focuses on the postal and philatelic effects that followed France’s 1860 annexation of the County of Nice and the Duchy of Savoy. It is based on an inventory of mail sent from post offices between the entrance of the French postal administration on 14 June 1860 and the adoption of French cancellations in late September 1860. It is the product of more than two decades of painstaking research. In this publication, Jean-Pierre Magne FRPSL, a renowned authority on the Second Empire’s imperforate issues (1853–1860), illuminates a rare era in which French postage stamps were cancelled with Sardinian postmarks, known as ‘Sarde sur France’.
The book is broken up into multiple chapters, one of which is devoted to cancellations from conventional offices and another to cancellations from travelling post offices. A rate and philatelic analysis, a historical introduction, and summary tables that give a clear picture of the cancellations and their rarity are also included. Published by Yvert et Tellier, the new book is available online at a retail price of €59.90 (ref. 138668). It will also be available in the publisher’s stand at the 77e Salon Philatélique d’Automne from 7 to 9 November (Porte de Champerret), and at Monacophil 2024 in December.
