Cedar Stamps, the publisher, has announced a new book by Semaan Bassil. Its full title is Mail in the Levant, Beirut, a case study in the early age of steamship & globalization (1835/1914).
The book examines Beirut, as a case study during Ottoman times when the emerging technologies of steam shipping and the modern postal system accelerated the flow of trade, knowledge, and travel. It focuses on histories such as emigration, tourism, missionaries, and early philatelic collectors, using covers, letters, postcards, illustrations, photographs, and archival materials.

The illustration was taken from the front side of a 1936 postcard, produced by the Brazilian airline Syndicato Condor, which advertised the trip from Brazil to Europe in just two days in cooperation with Lufthansa. It was picked up from Alexios Papadopoulos’ Twitter account. Alexios, a postal history and aerophilately enthusiast, has also provided us with last year’s illustration for our Season’s Greetings.
Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year!
