The highlights of IBRA 2023 in Essen

Bonn | 8.3.23 | Peter Platz | Only a few months to go – from May 25 to 28, 2023, the International Stamp World Exhibition will open its doors to philatelists from all over the world in the Ruhr metropolis of Essen. IBRA 2023 is the world championship of philately, with many exhibitors from all over the world presenting their outstanding exhibits.

Preparations for IBRA have been underway for several years. Due to Corona, the World Philatelic Championships originally planned for 2021 had to be postponed to this year. The collectors’ association Bund Deutscher Philatelisten (BDPh) has taken over the organization together with the service provider Philatelie Promotion UG. The main sponsors of IBRA 2023 are Deutsche Post, the stamp auction house Heinrich Köhler and the stamp auction house Christoph Gärtner. The aim is to offer something for every taste. The display of exhibits alone will be impressive. “We are showing the best collection exhibits from Germany and abroad in approximately 3,350 exhibition frames,” says BDPh President Alfred Schmidt. “Represented will be more than 750 exhibitors from all corners of the globe.” In addition, there will be exciting special shows, for example on the topics “Jewels of German Philately” and “100 Years of German Hyperinflation 1923”. And last but not least, the centerpiece of the IBRA hall will be a treasure chamber where unique world rarities will be on display. “A top highlight: visitors to IBRA will be able to view the crown jewel of world philately in the original – the legendary ‘Bordeaux letter’, which is the only piece to bear both of the fabulous Mauritius POST OFFICE stamps – the red one-penny and the blue two-pence,” reports Alfred Schmidt. In addition, true legends of old German philately will be on display – the unique first day cover of the first German stamp, the “Black One”, the fabulous and only surviving original sheet of the “Saxony Three” and the “Baden misprint “9-Kreuzer-blaugrün” from the collection of the Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunications.

Outstanding philatelists

The organizers will offer a forum on all four IBRA days, with expert lectures throughout the day on a wide variety of philatelic topics. “The speakers are outstanding philatelists who are among the most renowned experts in their respective fields,” Alfred Schmidt knows. “Also, a real bank in terms of knowledge are the many philatelic working and research communities that will have booths at IBRA.” In addition, there will be the IBRA stage in the foyer of the trade show, which will also offer an interesting and varied program throughout the duration of the show. IBRA 2023 will be the third FIP World Exhibition in Germany, following IBRA 1973 in Munich and IBRA 1999 in Nuremberg. It will be held in combination with the International Stamp Fair 2023 in Essen. First held in 1976, this has become an annual event. The striking focus of the fair is the large number of professional philatelists on site. More than 100 dealers, auctioneers and postal administrations will offer their philatelic treasures on nearly 4,000 square meters.
