La posta dei confinati
Marco Occhipinti’s La posta dei confinati (2026), published by Cosmo Iannone Editore, presents the first systematic study of postal control and censorship under Fascist political confinement in Italy between 1926 and 1943. The volume is the result of two decades of meticulous research into archival and postal sources, following the author’s earlier acclaimed work on postal history.
Focusing on an often overlooked dimension of repression, the book examines how correspondence sent and received by political exiles was strictly monitored, inspected and, where necessary, censored by the regime. It situates this practice within the broader system of police confinement, introduced in 1926, which affected around 15,000 individuals—ranging from anti-fascists and political dissidents to social outcasts and even regime loyalists deemed problematic—often without trial.
Through extensive documentation, including postmarks and previously unpublished archival material, Occhipinti analyses confinement sites such as Ponza, Ventotene and Lipari, as well as mainland locations. The work also highlights the human dimension, featuring biographies of fifty exiles and paying particular attention to the experiences of women, both as detainees and as family members who shared exile.
