Proofs, Essays and Reprints of the 2nd and 3rd Issues of the Kingdom of Sardinia

In a way, a book being out of print is good news, especially if it ends up being republished. This is what has happened with Paolo Cardillo’s study and catalogue Prove, saggi e ristampe della II e III emissione del Regno di Sardegna (Proofs, Essays and Reprints of the 2nd and 3rd Issues of the Kingdom of Sardinia), first published by Vaccari in 2013 and now released once more.

“The meticulous work carried out by typographer Francesco Matraire is explained in a simple, clear way and illustrated with large, sharp graphic plates,” the author explains. “It is aimed not only at enthusiasts in the field but also at anyone who wishes to enrich their permanent philatelic library.” The research also includes other items, particularly portrait-only proofs and gold leaf sheets, along with officially authorised reprints produced by Matraire himself in 1863.

The volume consists of 160 pages, including 14 plates and 160 colour illustrations (€40.00). The text is presented in both Italian and English—“a testament to its international relevance, confirmed by the many awards it has received in Europe and the United States in Philatelic Literature class.” The material is appraised using a nine-level scale, with the lowest category valued at €50.00.
