A Different Classification of the Large Hermes Heads Stamps of Greece
A few weeks ago, a new book on the first Greek issue was released. It is titled A Different Classification of the Large Hermes Heads Stamps of Greece.
The author, Athanasios D. Spanos, is a collector with over 60 years of experience and expertise in early Greek stamps. To present the Large Hermes Heads in their various printings, he adopts a new, simplified approach based on flowcharts. He provides all the specialised knowledge necessary for anyone who wishes to engage earnestly with a stamp as attractive and challenging as the Large Hermes Heads.
The book provides a detailed presentation of the naming and characteristics of each stamp in question, the objective criteria for distinction and classification, and the differentiation of stamps across various issues based on these criteria and their face values. Additionally, it examines variations in the quality of image printing over time and the deterioration of the Control Figures in relation to their face values.
It is worth noting the presentation of a large number of stamps in various shades, which emphasise the significant role of colour in this stamp and serve as an informal colour catalogue. The book also attempts to objectively identify the colours on the Large Hermes Head stamps from all issues using digital technology.
Written in Greek only, the book comprises 718 pages, printed in A4 size (21 x 30 cm) with a hardcover binding, and includes over 3,000 high-resolution illustrations, suitably enlarged for detailed study. It is designed to assist philatelists, particularly new collectors of the Large Hermes Heads, and to significantly enrich the existing philatelic literature on these iconic stamps.
