BOSTON 2026 stamps and promotional label
Thomas M. Fortunato, BOSTON 2026 Public Relations Chair, reports from BOSTON 2026.
A setenant pair of stamps and a collectible promotional label were released today in two ceremonies honoring the Boston 2026 World Expo during the Great American Stamp Show in Schaumburg, Illinois. The steel blue intaglio stamp duo depicts Boston’s Old North Church and a “midnight rider” on horseback in colonial garb holding a lantern. Greg Breeding, an art director for USPS, designed the stamps with artist Dan Gretta. They are sold in sheets of 20 at the current first-class rate of 78 cents per stamp, $15.60 per sheet.
Boston 2026 President Yamil Kouri presented the latest expo news and was joined by stamp artist Chris Calle and show dignitaries in releasing the fifth and final yearly exhibition promotional label. Calle’s design depicts William Barns Wollen’s 1910 oil on canvas “The Battle of Lexington” at the top. Below left is a version of John Singleton Copley’s famous portrait of Paul Revere, currently on display at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Center bottom is a 1940’s rendition of Revere’s ride alongside the image of “The Minuteman” sculpture by Daniel Chester French at Concord, Massachusetts.
As was the case with the prior self-adhesive labels, these were produced in sheetlets of 9 by the Portland Stamp Company. A total of 3,000 sheetlets were printed, 450 of which are numbered and signed by Calle. Both unsigned and signed versions are available on the Boston 2026 web site at www.boston2026.org while supplies last. Labels 1-4 are no longer available.
