Great Britain Postal Stationery with Security / Advertising Collars
Dr Alan K. Huggins MBE RDP Hon FRPSL, Honorary and first President of FEPA, Past President of the RPSL and the GBPS, and a specialist in Postal Stationery has published the results of his latest research in a book titled Great Britain Postal Stationery with Security / Advertising Collars.
British postal stationery envelopes and newspaper wrappers with added rings or collars have been known to collectors since the early days of the hobby in the 1860s. The primary purpose of these collars seems to have been for security or advertising. These ‘Official’ collars were printed together with the embossed postage dies in one operation, the colour of the collar thus being identical to the stamp. In later years, several companies adopted the concept, producing ‘Unofficial’ or private collars that were accepted by the Post Office alongside the ‘Official’ ones.
The 176-page book brings together existing information on the use of these collars, a practice adopted by only a few other countries. Published by the RPSL, it will soon be available at a retail price of £56, or £50 for members.
